Megan Kalm – School Secretary/Physical Education
Hello! I am excited to be starting my 4th year here at Queen of Peace School. Once again this year you will find me in the school office as school secretary and on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons in the gym as the PE teacher. I am also part of our fundraising committee, as co-chair, with my husband Jeff, of our pizza fundraiser, and a member of the marketing committee and green team. Most importantly, I am a parent of 3 children here at Queen of Peace School, Annalise-6th grade, Joseph-4th grade, and Claira-2nd grade.
I was born in Colorado, and raised here in Cloquet. I attended both the College of St. Scholastica and the Duluth Business University, where I obtained my associates degree. After finishing college I moved to Phoenix Arizona with my husband Jeff. We lived there for 3.5 years before returning to Minnesota…what was I thinking leaving the beautiful 100 degree weather for this frozen box?!
My family and I love anything that has to do with the outdoors. We enjoy a wide range of activities from swimming, mountain biking, rock climbing, playing soccer, and hiking (my favorite). I am really excited this year to share my passion for the outdoors with your children in gym class. I hope that I can inspire them to get out and do something to stay healthy.
Karin Sabyan – Preschool
This will be my seventh year at Queen of Peace and my fourth year as lead teacher in the preschool classroom. In addition to teaching at QOP, I am also the chair of the fundraising committee, a Destination Imagination Coach and a member of the marketing committee and school board. I feel privileged to say that in addition to being on the staff at Queen of Peace, I am also a parent and parishioner. My husband Tom and I moved to Cloquet nine years ago with our three children, Samantha (1st year of college UND), Sarena (12th grade CHS) and Thomas (TJ- 7th grade at CMS). We previously lived in South St. Paul where I earned my Bachelor of Science degree from St. Mary’s University in Minneapolis. Prior to living in the Twin Cities area, I was born and raised in Iowa City, Iowa (Go Hawkeyes!). I enjoy spending time with my family, playing and watching sports (especially the Vikings), traveling, working in the yard, playing with our dogs, and volunteering.
I am excited to be part of this unique learning environment at Queen of Peace. I look forward to working with your children and taking advantage of all of the teachable moments! Feel free to stop me in the hallways or send me an email with any questions!
Kristy Cummings – Preschool
Hi! This is my first year at Queen of Peace. I am co-teaching preschool, serving as a reading specialist for grades K-2, and helping with grades 5 & 6. I was a special education for eight years and prior to that I worked in Head Start for four years. I am originally from Ely and graduated from the University of Minnesota – Duluth with a degree in Early Childhood Education. I later went back to UMD to add special education to my teaching license.
I live in Cloquet with my husband, Tony and our two children, Chloe (5) and Tony (3). We enjoy spending time outdoors, fishing, going for walks, or just playing outside in the yard.
I am very excited to be a part of the Queen of Peace School and look forward to a great school year!!
Theresa Mathies – Kindergarten
Here we are amidst another grand adventure in the land of Kindergarten. This will be my second year on this adventure at Queen of Peace. I moved to the area two years ago when I took this position and joined this amazing school family. I have been part of the education system for over 15 years and have enjoyed every minute of it. I love being out in nature and enjoying God’s beautiful creation. Reading, baking/cooking, writing, and music are some of my favorite pastimes. Before moving to this area I was very active in my local theater and have been in many productions and even directed a few plays as well. I put my heart into everything I do and teaching is no exception. I am looking forward to another great year teaching Kindergarten as a member of the Queen of Peace family.
Pamela Hagen – 1st Grade
Hello from 1st grade! My name is Pam Hagen. I am thrilled to be starting my second year at Queen of Peace. I have 21 years of teaching experience and I am a proud alumnus of The College of St. Scholastica. I feel so blessed to be working in such a wonderful school and have loved getting to know the children and their families.
I was born and raised in Brainerd, MN and still enjoy spending time at my childhood home boating, water skiing, snowmobiling and enjoying family time. I live in Cloquet with my husband Steve and daughter Kaiya who is a Senior at Hermantown High School and also attends The College of St. Scholastica as a post secondary student. She keeps busy with school, track and college decisions. Our son Blake is married and lives in Duluth with his wife Maarja. It is nice they are close so we are able to spend time with them often. We also have a dog named Buggzey. I have always felt called by God to teach young children and serve their families. I feel very blessed to be able to be a part of the Queen of Peace staff and it is a joy to be working in such a beautiful, warm and loving place. I am looking forward to a wonderful year filled with love, faith, fun and learning!
Abby Weix – 2nd Grade
Hi my name is Abby Weix! I am so excited to start my first year here at Queen of Peace teaching second grade!
I was born and raised in Wisconsin where I received my bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood/Elementary Education. From there I taught Kindergarten until my first child was born and I decided to become a stay at home mom. My husband Bob and I are blessed to have two wonderful children. Alli is 8 and Jack is 4. We just moved to Cloquet last August from Appleton, Wi…and yes, we are HUGE Green Bay Packer fans!
I am so blessed to be your child’s Second Grade teacher this year. I believe each child is a truly unique individual that brings different talents, creativity and personality into our room and community here at our school. I feel my role as your child’s teacher is to love and care about your children and teach them in a way that they can learn best. I look forward to getting to know you and your child this school year.
“You’re off to great places! Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting, So get on your way!” – Dr. Seuss
Ashley Keppers – 3rd Grade
Greetings from 3rd grade! This is my 8th year at Queen of Peace, I spent my first six years in kindergarten, and this will be my second year in third grade. I am originally from Eveleth, and graduated from the University of Minnesota-Duluth (GO BULLDOGS!) with a degree in Elementary Education. My husband and I have been married for five years and have two children, Kaleb (4), and Kora (1). We enjoy going to Bulldog hockey games and Huskie baseball game together as a family.
Through the years I have known to grow and love the families I work with and the students that fill the classrooms. Queen of Peace is truly a unique setting, I feel fortunate to call my co-workers my “family” and enjoy spending my days with them. I am privileged to spend each day with a class full of eager learners, and have had most of them in kindergarten so the transition to third is exciting! I am currently working on my Masters in Differentiated Instruction through Concordia University-St. Paul. This experience has been fantastic and I love that I can apply what I am learning to my current classroom. Differentiated Instruction has always been a passion of mine, and I feel it is apparent when walking into our classroom. Please stop by, you will most likely find students anywhere but in a desk. This year we are doing flexible seating in our room. Students will have the opportunity to work in a variety of settings and with a variety of materials. I anticipate another year filled with faith, love, and lots of learning!
Aleksandra Petrovich – 4th Grade
Pozdrav (Greetings) from Fourth Grade!
I am grateful and excited to begin my third year as the QoP fourth grade teacher and 5th/6th math teacher. I earned my BA in English and Literature in Serbia where I was born and raised. I received my K-6 teaching license through the Graduate Teacher Licensure program at the College of St. Scholastica, where I am slated to complete my Masters in Teaching degree this upcoming spring.
I have lived in the States for almost 13 years, the last 5 ½ in Duluth. My family and I moved here from the Metro Detroit area. My husband Kristian is an Eastern Orthodox priest serving at St. George Serbian Orthodox Church in Gary-New Duluth. Our three children are all students at Queen of Peace. Teodora is in 6th grade, Yustina in 3rd, and Spiridon in Kindergarten.
What I enjoy most about teaching at Queen of Peace is that we are able to frame our learning in a way that reflects our faith. This unique perspective challenges and encourages us to dive deeper, leap higher, and explore wider than we could ever imagine. For, with God, all things are possible. In our school, we live and learn by these words every day. It is truly humbling and rewarding at the same time.
I look forward to an amazing year of spiritual growth and learning, both for my students and myself. I hope to share with them my enthusiasm for the faith, thirst for knowledge, fascination with math and the natural world, and love of languages, music, art, and literature.
May the Lord bless our year together in fourth grade!

I graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Community Health Education from the University of Minnesota Duluth. In 2008 I became licensed as a K-8 teacher upon completing the Graduate Teaching Licensure program at the College of St. Scholastica. So I’m a Bulldog and a Saint!
I grew up in Duluth and attended Marshall School . I currently live in Wrenshall with my husband Dean, and my thirteen year old son Joel. My son keeps us busy, with school, football, basketball and baseball. In my spare time I enjoy music, cooking, baking and volunteering in the community.
